Small Group Resources

A starting point

The Bible Project
There are heaps of resources on the Bible Project - from short videos exploring a single word or book of the Bible to longer group studies.

All their resources are free.

As an example we used this one with our group
Redemption Group Studies - 7 sessions Short studies which provide a few short passages to look at each week. There are related videos included, which you can choose to use if they’re helpful. The sessions are mostly down to your group exploring the passages and asking questions; the material also provides some context and insight. (The group studies are a download linked at the bottom of this page)

There’s an accompanying podcast series and daily Bible reading plan if group members want to dig deeper.

Some other group studies on the Bible Project include: Easter, Advent, The Holy Spirit, The Mountain and others.

Practicing the Way from John Mark Comer
A rich bank of studies exploring practises of discipleship. High-quality resources, each topic uses a workbook and videos to work through each session. The practices covered are sabbath, prayer, fasting, solitude, generosity, scripture, community, service and witness. Each topic is 4 weeks long. Our group found these inspiring, and they stretched us individually.

There’s suggested extra reading, optional tasks to apply what you’re learning, and accompanying podcasts for keen group members. We’ve used individual topics in isolation, with a different study in between.

All their resources are free, you’ll need to register for a free account.

Courses from 24-7 Prayer

Pete Greig and the 24-7 Prayer team have useful courses on Prayer and the practise of Lectio prayer, as well as wider topics like success and . The courses have helpful leader notes and video sessions which are meditative and practical.

Promises Kept by Carl Laferton

Exploring Old Testament promises of God and New Testament fulfilment.

9 sessions - each is split into two sections with application questions. They’re quite long studies which could be split over two sessions or select the key questions for your group.

£4 The Good Book Company (buy the book and get an ebook copy for free)

Old Testament Characters by Peter Scazzero - 12 sessions. Quite traditional bible study on specific people in certain scenarios with some helpful and unhelpful questions, we avoided the unhelpful questions and allowed group discussion to take the lead. Generally everyone has really enjoyed it. We have learnt a lot about less familiar stories. It's quite a long study but been worth it.

£4.70 on World of books

Some studies themed around Lent:

Open doors series on Lament - Ashes - 5 weeks with videos and free booklet

Lent Studies from 24-7 Prayer - In The Desert - 7 weeks

Church of England Lent Studies - Booklets can be purchased, there are videos for groups to use.

Here’s some inspiration for studies to use with your small group. It’s not definitive; you’re welcome to study all sorts of good things with your group. We’d love to hear how it’s going and if you find other good group resources, we’d love to add them to this list for others to enjoy.

Resources are linked from the title of each item.
